Funds generated from Mt. Charleston license plate sales

State Lands logoCARSON CITY, Nev. — The Nevada Division of State Lands has announced the second round of grants from the Mt. Charleston License Plate Program with $125,000 in funds available. Applications for suitable projects are being accepted now through January 29, 2010. Application information can be obtained by going to the Division’s website at www.lands.nv.gov.

Funds for the grants are generated from sales of the Mt. Charleston license plate, one of many specialty plates available at the Department of Motor Vehicles that include a percentage of the registration fees assigned to special efforts statewide. The intent of the program is to support the natural environment of the Mount Charleston area through projects that improve wildlife habitat, forest conditions, public access and recreational uses.

“I am pleased that we are moving forward with our next round of grants and are able to offer these funds for the protection and stewardship of this treasured area.” said Jim Lawrence, administrator, Nevada Division of State Lands.

“The license plate program offers citizens a wonderful opportunity to participate in the stewardship of the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, a national asset right in our own backyard,” said Alan O’Neill, executive director for the Outside Las Vegas Foundation, a member of the license plate program technical review committee.

O’Neill said of round 1 projects, “What is really exciting is that the license plate dollars also leveraged private funds for each of the six projects selected for funding which results in building additional capacity for educating the public about this special place and for assisting in its stewardship.”
