Nevada State Parks LogoCARSON CITY, Nev. — The Nevada Division of State Parks is celebrating its 75th anniversary throughout 2010.

Nevada’s state park system was authorized by the 1935 legislature on the same day that the first four state parks were officially established, on March 26. These included Valley of Fire, Cathedral Gorge, Kershaw-Ryan and Beaver Dam State Parks.

As part of the celebration, State Parks is sponsoring a poster contest for school-aged children. A $100 cash prize is being offered for each first place winner in three age groups: elementary school grades K-5, middle school grades 6-8, and high school grades 9-12. Second and third prizes will also be offered for each grade category.

All posters must consist of original artwork, either hand drawn or computer generated, color or black-and-white. Art must be submitted on 11” x 17” poster board, using any feasible graphic media. There is a limit of one entry per child. Each entry must include the words: “Nevada State Parks, 75th Anniversary, 1935-2010” and/or “Nevada State Parks, Diamond Jubilee, 1935-2010.”

All entries must be accompanied by an entry form, with the name of the student, name of parent(s), address, phone number where they can be reached, age, grade and name of school (if applicable).

The entry form is available on State Parks’ Web site at www.parks.nv.gov. Entry form and posters should be mailed or delivered in a sealed envelope to the Nevada State Parks Headquarters, 901 S. Stewart Street, Suite 5005, Carson City, NV 89701 with the words “75th Poster Contest Entry” printed at the bottom-front of the envelope.

The deadline is December 31, 2009, and all entries and art work become the property of the Nevada Division of State Parks.

The division operates 24 state parks, recreation areas and historic parks throughout Nevada state totaling some 145,000 acres and hosts over 3.3 million visitors per year from around the world.
