Beaver Dam State Park plans presented to public, feedback being sought until June 10

beaverdam 200x300 Beaver Dam State Park plans presented to public, feedback being sought until June 10CARSON CITY, Nev. — Nevada Division of State Parks presented three alternatives for the management and master planning of Beaver Dam State Park at public workshops conducted in Caliente and Las Vegas on May 18, 2010.

The meetings were held to address long-range planning for facilities, services and resource management at one of Nevada’s first state parks.

The alternatives presented were based on input received during public workshops conducted in Caliente and Las Vegas in 2007. These past workshops focused on issues relating to a flood that damaged the Schroeder Reservoir Dam beyond repair and resulted in the loss of Schroeder Reservoir. Additional issues included potential road upgrades, visitor use patterns,  the Lincoln County Lands Bill that added an additional 2,952 acres to the park, watercourse and fishery restoration and desired uses of the park.

Participants at the 2010 workshops expressed support for certain aspects of two of the alternatives, which proposed improved access to the park, expansion of ATV and equestrian facilities, trail expansion, Hamblin Ranch historic interpretation and installation of a limited number of primitive cabins and/or yurts. Resource management proposals included stream fishery enhancements, forest health and weed species control.

Nevada State Parks is still seeking comments from members of the public on the proposed management plans. All three alternatives, along with a comment form, are posted on State Parks’ website at http://www.parks.nv.gov/masterplans/Beaver%20Dam/BeaverDam.html. Comments will be accepted through June 10.
