ValleyofFire 196x300 February programs at Valley of Fire State Park OVERTON, Nev. – The following are programs presented at Valley of Fire State Park in February.  Programs and hikes may change due to weather and staffing. February 5: Mouse’s Tank Guided Hike

Discover the Anasazi rock carvings in Petroglyph Canyon, as a park ranger leads you to the most famous water tank in the park. This is a ¾ mile hike through sand and rock, but is very easy.  Come join us and make sure to bring appropriate footwear, sun block, sunglasses and plenty of water.

February 6: Desert Bighorn Sheep

Meet with a park ranger to learn breeding, eating habits, range, and track identification of the desert bighorn sheep and discuss the difficulties they face surviving in the desert.

WHEN: Sunday, 2/6/11 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and again from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

WHERE: Visitor Center

February 12: Anasazi/Ancestral Puebloan

Join a park ranger and survey the regions within the Anasazi culture area, study their timeline and discuss dates and use architectural and other material culture items from the area to better understand the people who left Valley of Fire’s petroglyphs.

WHEN: Saturday, 2/12/11 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and again from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

February 13: Guided Petroglyph Tour

Learn about the Anasazi petroglyphs found in this area as a park ranger leads a ¾ mile hike to hidden panels of rock carvings. Then identify the park’s most popular water tank. Please bring appropriate footwear, sun screen, sunglasses and water.

February 19: Mouse’s Tank

Join a park ranger and learn more about Mouse, the outlaw who eluded capture by hiding out in the area that bears his name. Other topics include the Anasazi petroglyphs that predate Mouse, sandstone characteristics, and plant identification.

WHEN: Saturday, 2/19/11 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and again from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

February 20: Rainbow Vista Guided Hike

Hike with a ranger down to the Fire Canyon Overlook. Along the way learn about the geology, plants and animals of Valley of Fire. Please bring appropriate footwear, sun screen, sunglasses and water.

WHEN: Sunday, 2/20/11 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

WHERE: Rainbow Vista Trailhead

February 26: Coyote Program

Join a park ranger and learn more about coyotes. We will survey their range, name origin, breeding, habitat, diet and visit the animal’s role in Native American mythology.

WHEN: Saturday, 2/26/11 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. and again from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

February 27: White Domes Guided Hike

Hike the 1.25 mile loop with a park ranger. You’ll enjoy the remnants of an old movie set, slot canyon, and plant identification. Please wear appropriate footwear and bring sunscreen, sunglasses and water.
