April events at Valley of Fire State Park

ValleyofFire 196x300 April events at Valley of Fire State ParkOVERTON, Nev. – The following events will be held at Valley of Fire State Park in the month of April. These events are open to the public. Entry into the park is $10.00 per vehicle with a $2.00 discount for Nevada residents. Programs and hikes may change due to weather and staffing. APRIL 2: Guided Petroglyph Canyon Hike

Discover the Anasazi rock carvings in Petroglyph Canyon, as a park ranger leads you to the most famous water tank in the park. This is an easy, three-quarter mile hike through sand and rock. Make sure to bring appropriate footwear, sun block, sunglasses and plenty of water.

When: Saturday, 4/2/11 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Where: Mouse Tank Trailhead

APRIL 3: Mouse’s Tank Program

Join a park ranger and learn more about Mouse, the outlaw who eluded capture by hiding out in the area that bears his name. Other topics discussed will include the Anasazi petroglyphs that predate Mouse, sandstone characteristics and plant identification.

When: Sunday, 4/3/11 from 10:30 to11:30 a.m. and repeated at 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

APRIL 16: 2nd Annual Valley of Fire Classic Car Show

Join us for our 2nd Annual Classic Car Show. Open to pre-1985 classic vehicles. Music, food and a history display will compliment the classic cars. Trophies and prizes from Maverick Helicopters Inc. will be awarded for first, second, and third place in the categories of Crowd Pleasers, Participant’s Choice and Boy Scouts Choice. A pre-entry form is required for those wishing to show their vehicles.

When: Saturday, 4/16/11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; awards presented at 2 p.m.

Where: Visitor Center Lower Parking Lot. There will be a shuttle service provided from the event area parking to the car show.

APRIL 17: Guided Rainbow Vista Hike

Hike with a ranger to the Fire Canyon Overlook. Along the way, learn about the geology, plants and animals. In addition to the flora and fauna, this area offers beautiful scenery for photographers. Bring a camera, appropriate footwear, sun screen, sunglasses and water.

When: Sunday, 4/17/11 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Where: Rainbow Vista Trail Head

APRIL 23: What Jurassic Park Got Wrong

Investigate big screen dinosaur inconsistencies with our guest speaker, Cap’N Dave. This program will be fun and informative for all ages.

When: Saturday, 4/23/11 repeated from 11a.m. to12 p.m., 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and 2 to 3 p.m.

APRIL 30: Desert Blooms

Enjoy a slide program featuring Valley of Fire’s vegetation. We’ll identify the beautiful plants in bloom and discuss where to find them.

When: Saturday, 4/30/11 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and repeated at 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
