ValleyofFire 196x300 March programs at Valley of Fire State Park OVERTON, Nev. – The following is a list of events held at Valley of Fire State Park for the month of March.  The park is located in Overton, Nevada off Interstate Highway 15, 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas .  Entry into the park is $10 per vehicle with $2 discounts for Nevada residents.  Programs and hikes may change due to weather and staffing.  Visit http://www.parks.nv.gov for the park’s most up to date interpretative schedule.

What: Dinos of the Valley of Fire

When: Saturday 3/5/11 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Where: Visitor Center

Description: Discover the many types of dinosaurs that used to roam Valley of Fire with guest speaker Cap ’N Dave.

What: Leave No Trace Trainers Course

When: Saturday 3/5/11from 8 a.m. to Sunday 3/6/11 at 5 p.m.

Where: Group Use Site #3

Description: This program promotes skills and ethics to support the sustainable use of wild lands and natural areas. This is a two-day course with one night of camping. After completing this course, you will become a Leave No Trace Trainer and will receive a certificate from the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics in Boulder, Colorado. There is a maximum of 12 and minimum of 5 participants for this program and reservations must be made no later than February 26.  For more information please call Valley of Fire at 702-397-2088.

What: Nevada Wildlife Program

When: Saturday 3/12/11 from10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Where: Visitor Center

Description: Join guest speaker Margie Klein of the Nevada Department of Wildlife as she talks about the many    mammals, reptiles and birds that inhabit southern Nevada.

What: Guided Rainbow Vista Hike

When: Saturday 3/13/11 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Where: Rainbow Vista Trail Head

Description: Hike with a ranger to the Fire Canyon Overlook. Learn about the geology, plants and animals of Valley of Fire. In addition to the flora and fauna, this area offers beautiful scenery for the photography. Please bring a camera, appropriate footwear, sun screen, sunglasses and water.

What: Guided White Domes Hike

When: Saturday 3/19/11 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Where: White Domes Trail Head

Description: Hike the 1.25 mile loop with a park ranger. Enjoy the remnants of an old movie set, slot canyon and plant identification. Please bring appropriate footwear, sunscreen, sunglasses and water.

What: Atlatl Demonstration

When: Sunday 3/20/11 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Where: Atlatl Rock Picnic Area

Description: Drop by Atlatl Rock and learn about this ancient tool, the atlatl. It predates the bow and arrow and was commonly used by natives of the area while hunting bighorn sheep. Get a chance to throw an atlatl and test your hunting skills.

What: 20th Annual World Atlatl Association Contest

When: Saturday 3/26/11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Where: Atlatl Rock Picnic Area

Description: Watch and participate in the throwing of atlatl darts at targets set up on a point system. Learn atlatl history and significance as it related to Native Americans — and compete for the chance to win a trophy.
