Nevada Division of Environmental Protection provides $40,000 to help fund recycling projects

Nevada Division of Environmental Protection provides $40,000 in grants to help fund recycling projects statewide

As part of its mission to foster a “greener” Nevada, the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection’s Recycling Program is excited to announce that it has awarded $40,000 in grants to help fund a variety of recycling projects throughout the State. Collectively, these projects are designed to help promote community awareness about the importance of protecting our diverse natural resources through “reducing, reusing and recycling.” The grant funding comes from Nevada’s Solid Waste Management Account, which receives $1 per tire for each retail tire sold statewide.

Recycling projects that will be funded in 2020 include:

Carson City School District (Carson City):  Carson City School’s Recycling project- $16,721

Every school within the Carson City School District will receive a recycling center to encourage our youth to recycle items such as plastic bottles and containers, aluminum, tin and steel cans, glass bottles and jars, paperboard, mixed office paper, cardboard, and more.

greenUp! (Carson City):  Green Dining District Phase 2- $12,898

Building on the success of the Green Dining Districts pilot program launched in 2019, phase 2 will include 10 additional restaurants. Each participating restaurant has committed to implementing a variety of eco-friendly measures, including eliminating plastic straws, discontinuing Styrofoam containers, composting food waste, leveraging smart energy saving measures, and more.

Liberty High School’s Environmental Awareness Club (Clark County):  I Recycle…Do you? project – $3,355

Three new recycling centers will be installed throughout the high school, which will complete its current paper recycling infrastructure. These centers will help educate the students about the importance of separating waste from recycling and establish a source for organic compost for their gardening projects. This project will also support the Environmental Awareness Club in their goal to transform the high school into a “No Waste” facility by 2022.

Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (Washoe County):  Recycling Education Outreach to Hispanic Community - $5,620

Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB) will help promote recycling opportunities by providing messaging in Spanish through social media, print, radio, and a variety of digital platforms. The program will also encourage access to KTMB’s website, which is available in Spanish, and features important information on how to recycle curbside as well as how to recycle specialty items.

Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe (Washoe County):  Nixon Gym Water Fountain Project- $2,965

A new water bottle fill station will be installed at the Parks and Recreation Department’s tribal gym. Currently, there is no source of potable water available for youth activities, creating a significant amount of waste from single-use plastic bottles. This project includes repairing the water system at the facility, allowing for potable water to be available onsite while decreasing the use of disposable containers.

Yerington High School (Lyon County):  Yerington High School Recycling Project-$1,110

Continuing the success of Yerington High School’s new recycling program, this project supports the purchase and installation of additional recycling collection stations campus-wide. The high school will increase the volume of recycled paper and school supplies as well as expand collection efforts towards plastic recycling and metals recovery.
