Nevadans encouraged to help prioritize historic preservation projects

Nevadans encouraged to share their input to help identify, prioritize historic preservation projects across the state

Let your voice be heard! This November, the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office (NSHPO) will be convening a series of public workshops in every county across the state, providing all Nevadans with opportunities to share their input on projects they would like to see funded through the Commission for Cultural Centers and Historic Preservation (CCCHP) grant program. This public input will help shape the CCCHP’s updated 10-year plan, which focuses on identifying and prioritizing grant funding for historic buildings and archaeological sites to be used as cultural centers. “Nevada has a storied history, from the Comstock in Virginia City, to the neon lights of Las Vegas, to the many archaeological wonders that contribute to the state’s unique heritage and sense of place,” said NSHPO Administrator Rebecca Palmer. “By participating in our community workshops, you can help protect Nevada’s one-of-a-kind historic and cultural treasures for generations to come.”

Since 1993, the CCCHP program has provided more than $44.7 million in grants for over 100 projects throughout Nevada to preserve and restore the state’s iconic cultural centers and archaeological attractions. CCCHP grants have supported a wide variety of projects, from world-famous properties like the Mob Museum in Las Vegas ($2 million), to more localized projects like the Elko Visitor’s Center ($100,000).

The CCCHP is led by representatives from the Nevada Humanities Committee, the Board of Museums and History, the Nevada Arts Council, the State Council on Libraries and Literacy, and the tourism industry. CCCHP grants are open to all government agencies and nonprofit organizations in Nevada. Projects must include a historic property, feature, or archaeological site in need of rehabilitation or pre-development work.
