NDOR Releases Economic Impact Analysis for Nevada

NDOR Releases Economic Impact Analysis Highlighting Outdoor Recreation as Key Driver of Nevada’s Economy

CARSON CITY, NV – The Nevada Division of Outdoor Recreation (NDOR) has released their Economic Impact Analysis, and the results are striking. Outdoor recreation is a $24 billion industry in Nevada, generating $13.7 billion in total economic output, supporting more than 75,000 jobs, and contributing $8.8 billion to the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

In fact, outdoor recreation has officially surpassed the mining industry in GDP contribution and is rapidly becoming a cornerstone of Nevada’s economic diversification strategy. Beyond driving tourism and job creation, outdoor recreation is also a defining part of Nevada’s identity — strengthening communities, supporting quality of life, and improving the well-being of residents across the state.

Outdoor recreation is a powerful driver of rural resilience—nearly 40% of the sector’s economic benefits are realized in rural counties, even though they make up just 10% of Nevada’s population. This demonstrates the essential role outdoor recreation plays in strengthening gateway communities and supporting sustainable economic development.

It also delivers major health benefits. Outdoor recreation generates an estimated $2.06 billion each year in avoided healthcare costs, underscoring its significant contribution to public health and long-term wellness.

Beyond its economic and health impacts, outdoor recreation fuels a wide range of industries—from hospitality and retail to manufacturing and healthcare—while helping attract and retain talent, build community pride, and protect Nevada’s natural heritage for future generations.

“Since 2020, outdoor recreation has become increasingly important to Nevada’s broader tourism and hospitality sector, helping drive local and regional economic development and diversification efforts across the state,” said Fred Steinmann, Director of the University Center for Economic Development.  “Outdoor recreation enthusiasts that visit our state help support a wide range of industries, including hotels, restaurants, retail, and even local area grocery stores.  Many of our state’s small businesses depend on residents and visitors who engage in outdoor recreation, and many rural communities continue to make sustainable approaches to outdoor recreation a prominent feature of their economic development strategies.”

Johnny Mojica, contractor for the Economic Impact Analysis from Radbridge Incorporated stated, “We often think of recreation in categories - hunters, hikers, anglers, skiers - but the data show how much those worlds overlap. Half of hunters also hike, and a quarter of skiers also fish. Most people aren’t just one kind of recreationist; they are part of a broader community that depends on healthy, accessible public lands. The overlap also shows the opportunity to connect people with new experiences and strengthen the shared value of these places.”

“We are proud to release our Economic Impact Analysis for outdoor recreation in Nevada,” shared Denise Beronio, NDOR Administrator. “Thanks to all our partners who helped bring this report to life. The message is clear: outdoor recreation isn’t just a ‘nice to have’—it’s a must-have for Nevada.”

NDOR continues to place conservation and stewardship at the forefront of outdoor recreation planning and infrastructure investment. The report identifies lands that should be conserved, enhanced, and promoted for recreation, while also elevating dark sky preservation and astro-tourism as emerging economic and cultural assets for Nevada.

NDOR is excited to work with communities and partners across the state to advance the report’s policy recommendations and ensure Nevada continues to lead the nation in outdoor recreation innovation, access, and sustainability. Together, we can ensure that every Nevadan - and every visitor - has the opportunity to proudly “Play the Nevada Way.”
